How is NC State for Computer Science?

I'm considering majoring in computer science at NC State. How good is the program there? Is its ranking impressive? Would love to hear from current students or anyone with insight.

North Carolina State University, commonly referred to as NC State, is indeed well-regarded for its Computer Science program. The program spans a wide range of sub-disciplines, including artificial intelligence, graphics, systems & networking, and computational science, giving students a broad understanding of the field.

In terms of rankings, these can vary depending on the source, but NC State's Computer Science program consistently ranks among the top in the country. While overall rank is a good starting point, remember that a higher-ranked program doesn't always mean it will be the best fit for every student.

What many students appreciate about NC State's program is the emphasis on experiential learning. There are numerous research opportunities for undergraduates, and the department has strong ties with industry partners in the Research Triangle area, which provides plenty of internship and co-op opportunities.

Furthermore, the university boasts a strong job placement rate for its Computer Science graduates, with high average starting salaries. This speaks volumes about the respect and recognition the program has in the industry.

Still, it's crucial for you to assess other factors like size of classes, availability of faculty, fit with the campus culture, location, and cost of attendance alongside the program's reputation. Connect with current students or alumni to get a firsthand account of their experiences, and don't forget to make a campus visit if you can! The feel of a campus, the classroom environment, and the overall culture can be equally, if not more important than a program's ranking. Best of luck with your decision!
