How safe are universities in America?

When compiling my college list, safety is a big consideration for me. Can anyone recommend some of the safest universities in America? What factors should I be looking at to determine campus safety?

Safety is definitely an important factor to consider when choosing a university. In determining campus safety, there are a few key things to consider.

Firstly, look at campus police and security. Does the university have a campus police department and how active are they? Are there emergency phone stations scattered throughout campus? Some universities also offer late-night escort services or shuttle buses to keep students safe.

Secondly, consider the university's location. Is it in a city or more rural area? What is the general safety level of its surrounding area? However, keep in mind that universities are usually well-equipped with safety measures, even if the surrounding area may have higher crime rates.

Thirdly, note the university's systems and processes in place for emergencies. Are there clear evacuation routes and regular drills? Do they have an alert system to notify students in the event of a lockdown or other crisis?

Lastly, look at Clery Act reports. Universities in the U.S. are required by law to disclose campus security information, including crime statistics, through the Clery Act. You can ask universities directly for these reports or find them online.

Some universities known for their strong safety measures include University of California--Irvine, Brigham Young University--Provo, and New York University. These universities report low crime rates and have strong safety measures in place.

However, remember that safety is multi-faceted and goes beyond just crime rates. Consider things like mental health resources and support, inclusivity, and communal attitudes. It's also worth reaching out to current students or alumni to gather some firsthand experiences.
