What are the admission requirements for West Point?

I'm considering applying to West Point after high school, and I'm curious about what their admission requirements are. Do you need specific extracurriculars, test scores, or recommendations? How competitive is the application process?

Applying to West Point, more formally known as the United States Military Academy, is a process that is a bit more extensive compared to traditional colleges. It's quite competitive, as West Point looks not just for strong academics, but also for leadership potential, physical aptitude, and medical fitness.

On the academic side, there is not a cutoff for SAT/ACT scores; West Point takes a holistic approach. But higher grades and scores tend to be more competitive. There are minimum requirements for the SAT: you need a 500 in Math and a 500 in Evidence-Based Reading and Writing. On the ACT, you need an 18 Math, 19 English, and 20 Reading. However, most successful West Point applicants have substantially higher scores.

Several extracurricular activities can help your application. West Point is interested in students who have demonstrated leadership in their schools, communities, or through athletics. It values activities that show your ability to manage, motivate, and lead others, and it looks favorably on varsity athletes and team captains, student government officials, and other leadership positions.

In addition to academic and leadership achievements, you'll need to pass the Candidate Fitness Assessment which measures strength, agility, speed, and endurance. This includes exercises such as the basketball throw, pull-ups/flexed arm hang, shuttle run, sit-ups, push-ups and a one-mile run.

You'll need to get a nomination, usually from a U.S. Representative or Senator from your state. There are also a few other nomination sources, such as the Vice President of the U.S., West Point's Superintendent, and for students whose parents are in the military.

You'll also undergo a medical exam to ensure you meet the physical standards necessary for a military career.

Finally, you'll need to provide letters of recommendation. There's an academic evaluation which consists of a letter of recommendation from your 11th or 12th grade Math teacher and your 11th or 12th grade English teacher. Recommendations from a coach, employer, or school official who knows you well are also encouraged.

Ultimately, West Point is looking for cadets with strong academic records, proven leadership skills, physical fitness, and a clear medical record. The application process is competitive, but this ensures that those who are accepted are well-prepared for the rigorous program it offers. Remember, attending the US Military Academy is also a commitment to serve in the U.S. Army upon graduation, and this service component is a significant part of the decision-making process.
