What's the UCLA College of Letters and Science like?

I've been looking into UCLA and heard a lot about the College of Letters and Science there. Can anyone share insights on what kind of programs they offer and how it stands out from other colleges at UCLA?

UCLA's College of Letters and Sciences is the university's undergraduate college and is by far the largest college at UCLA, housing around 85% of the university's students. This might not seem like a unique feature, but it ensures that students here form a bulk of the UCLA community and therefore, have substantial resources earmarked for them.

Within the College of Letters and Sciences, you'll find a diverse array of majors across multiple disciplines. They're divided into five divisions: life sciences, physical sciences, social sciences, humanities, and international Institute. Some popular majors include Psychology, Political Science, Economics, Biology and English. The College of Letters and Science is also home to iconic programs such as the UCLA dental school.

There's a distinct emphasis on interdisciplinary learning in the college. Students are encouraged to explore courses outside their major, fostering a comprehensive educational experience that includes multiple perspectives. This approach prepares students to think critically and address complex issues from various angles, an important skill in today's increasingly interconnected world.

One key program offered by the College of Letters and Science is the Cluster Program, which appeals to many students. It's essentially an series of interdisciplinary courses that focus on a central theme and meet general education requirements all while fulfilling writing requirements. This program brings together students and faculty in smaller, more collaborative academic communities.

Lastly, the College of Letters and Sciences sets itself apart through its emphasis on undergraduate research. Students have numerous opportunities to get involved with research, whether it's assisting professors or launching their own projects. Many students have used these experiences as springboards into prestigious graduate and professional schools.

So, while UCLA is home to several other colleges, including the School of the Arts and Architecture, the School of Engineering and Applied Science, and the School of Nursing, the College of Letters and Science stands out due to its size, diverse offerings, interdisciplinary approach, unique cluster program, and focus on undergraduate research.
