Is the University of Minnesota a good choice for STEM majors?

I'm thinking about applying to UMN but am unsure about its reputation in STEM fields. Could anyone share their experience with academic programs and research opportunities at the University of Minnesota?

The University of Minnesota has a strong reputation within the STEM disciplines. Particularly, its programs in chemistry and chemical engineering, computer science, mathematics, and physics are highly regarded and have consistently ranked well nationally.

In terms of research opportunities, the university provides ample opportunities for undergraduate students to get involved in research through its Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program (UROP). This program supports students who wish to collaborate with faculty on research, scholarly, or creative projects, and not only provides them a stipend but also the chance to gain experience, understand how their field operates, and establish relationships with faculty.

In addition, the university's location in Minneapolis-St. Paul provides access to a dynamic community known for its technology-startup scene and is home to numerous large medical device and technology companies, like 3M and Medtronic. Many students find internships and employment opportunities with such companies, allowing for great hands-on experience in their fields.

Keep in mind, college fit is about more than just academics. You should also take into account the campus culture, location, student body demographics, extracurricular opportunities, and cost when making your decision. However, if you're strictly considering academics and opportunities in STEM, UMN would be a solid choice.
