What can you tell me about Temple University's application process?

I'm starting to research colleges and Temple University has caught my eye. Does anyone have insights on the application process, like important deadlines, any tips for writing essays, or just general advice if you've applied?

Temple University utilizes the Common App, so you'll want to fill out the application there, which will include providing your high school transcript and completing a series of short answers.

The Common App typically opens on August 1 for the upcoming cycle, allowing you the chance to fill out your application over the summer before your senior year. There are two main application deadlines: Early Action (EA) which is November 1, and Regular Decision (RD) which is February 1. If you apply to EA, you should get your decision in mid-December. RD applicants will hear back by mid-March.

As for the personal essay, Temple University doesn't have any specific prompt, instead choosing to use the general Common App prompt. So, you're free to write your essay about a topic of your choosing. When writing your essay, make sure it is uniquely personal to you and your experiences. Try and avoid cliche topics, and instead focus on a personal story that effectively showcases characteristics like your resilience, dedication, or passion for a specific field.

In addition to the personal essay, there are several university-specific short essay questions. These questions aim to assess your fit with the university and your interest in attending Temple. Make sure you do your research about the university's values and programs so that you can answer these questions effectively.

Admission to Temple is fairly competitive, so demonstrating your interest could potentially give you an edge. Keep in mind, though, that Temple is one of those schools that does not consider demonstrated interest in their admissions decisions.

Lastly, Temple University is test-optional, meaning you can choose whether or not to submit your SAT or ACT scores when applying. If you feel your scores accurately reflect your abilities and complement your application, you may choose to submit them. But if you feel your scores don't portray your abilities well, you can choose not to submit them, and Temple will place greater emphasis on other aspects of your application, like your GPA and extracurricular activities.

Good luck with your application to Temple! It's an excellent choice and offers a vibrant student life and strong academics.
