What are the University of Virginia admission requirements?

I'm considering applying to UVA and want to know about their admission requirements. What's the GPA they usually look for, and do they have any specific course prerequisites? Also, how important are essays and extracurriculars for getting in?

The University of Virginia (UVA) is a highly competitive institution and has several requirements for its applicants.

Starting with academic credentials, UVA doesn't state a specific minimum GPA for its applicants. However, successful applicants generally have high academic performance. The middle 50% of admitted students usually have an unweighted GPA between 4.0 and 4.3 on a weighted 5.0 scale.

UVA requires high school coursework in specific areas:

- 4 years of English

- 4 years of Math (including Algebra I, Geometry, Algebra II, and an advanced math course)

- 4 years of a single Foreign Language (American Sign Language is accepted)

- 3 years of Social Studies (including History)

- 3 years of Science (preferably with a lab)

Moving onto standardized tests, note that UVA has adopted a test-optional policy for the 2024-2025 application cycle. This means submitting SAT or ACT scores is optional. If a student feels that their score reflects their academic ability, they can include it. Otherwise, applications will be reviewed and highly considered without it.

Essays are an essential part of UVA's application. The university uses essays to understand more about an applicant beyond academic performance. You'll be asked to write two essays as part of the UVA supplement in the Common Application. Each prompt is an opportunity for you to demonstrate your writing skills and share something meaningful about your experiences, values, or goals.

In terms of extracurriculars, UVA, like most selective colleges, appreciates students who demonstrate a genuine commitment and considerable achievement in a few activities, rather than a minor participation in many. They will especially appreciate Tiers 1 & 2 activities on the 4 Tiers of Extracurriculars, which are rarer activities that show exceptional achievement or leadership.

Lastly, UVA requires two letters of recommendation from two core academic area teachers who have taught you in high school. An additional recommendation from a school counselor or another individual who knows you well, is optional but can provide a more comprehensive view of you as a student and a person. Please do remember to submit your application by UVA's deadlines: November 1st for Early Decision and Early Action, and January 5th regular decision. Best of luck!
