What should I know about studying at a university in PA?

I'm considering going to college in Pennsylvania and I'm curious about the university scene there. What are some standout schools, and what should I know about the college experience in the state?

Pennsylvania hosts a variety of esteemed universities known for their exceptional programs, diversity, and rich cultural experience. Depending on your academic interests and personal preferences, Pennsylvania has something for everyone.

Starting with the Ivy league, the University of Pennsylvania (UPenn) in Philadelphia is globally recognized, most notably for its Wharton School of Business. Penn State University is a well-respected public research university with a host of undergraduate and graduate programs with main campus in University Park. It's a quintessential "college town" with a huge population of students and a lively sports culture.

The state also boasts top-notch liberal arts colleges such as Swarthmore College and Haverford College, both of which provide a small, close-knit community and the opportunity for personalized instruction.

Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh is renowned for its STEM programs, particularly in Computer Science and Engineering. It’s also got a strong performing arts program, known for drama and music.

Lehigh University in Bethlehem and The University of Pittsburgh (Pitt) are also good choices with diverse programs and robust resources.

Each of these locations provides a unique backdrop to your educational experience. For example, Philadelphia is steeped in historical significance, is culturally diverse and has a vibrant city lifestyle, whereas valley areas such as Haverford and Swarthmore colleges provide a more rural, serene setting.

A student's college experience in Pennsylvania will depend largely on their individual preferences and lifestyle: whether they prefer a bustling, urban campus life or a more serene, rural setting, whether they want to participate in Greek life, their interest in engaging in sports activities (Penn State's Nittany Lions have a passionate following), etc.

Lastly, when choosing a college, beyond its location, do consider factors like size, available majors, student body diversity, campus culture, financial aid, and your career goals. These factors will collectively dictate your experience at a university in Pennsylvania.
