Which majors should I consider at Swarthmore?

I'm interested in applying to Swarthmore College, but I'm still unsure about which major to pursue. Could anyone share insights on the popular or unique majors there that might influence my decision?

Certainly, Swarthmore has several respected and unique programs.

1. Engineering: Swarthmore is one of the few liberal arts colleges with an ABET-accredited Engineering Department. This allows students to merge their engineering studies with other interests in the liberal arts.

2. Computer Science: This program has a strong reputation due to its emphasis on algorithmic thinking and the depth and breadth of its coursework.

3. Black Studies: This program takes an interdisciplinary approach to the study of Black people, culture, and institutions, in the U.S and across the diaspora. Not many undergraduate institutions offer this specificity.

4. Honors Program: Not exclusively a major, but a hallmark of Swarthmore. This program, inspired by the Oxford tutorial system, invites students to explore coursework more deeply and independently.

5. Environmental Studies: This integrates different disciplines to understand environmental complexities. Swarthmore’s campus is a designated Arboretum, providing a living laboratory for students.

6. Peace & Conflict Studies: Rare for an undergraduate institution, this department explores conflict and potential strategies for peace on a variety of scales.

Consider your interests and strengths and look at how those can fit with the academic options available. If you enjoy hands-on work and problem-solving, Engineering or Computer Science might be a good fit. If you're inclined toward social issues, Black studies, Environmental Studies or Peace & Conflict Studies might interest you. The Honors program is something you should consider if you enjoy independent study and high academic challenge.
