What's student life like at Worcester Polytech?

I'm thinking about applying to Worcester Polytechnic Institute and would love to know more about the campus atmosphere and student life. Is it a welcoming community, and how's the workload?

Worcester Polytechnic Institute, also known as WPI, is known for cultivating a supportive, inclusive, and collaborative environment. The campus buzzes with diverse student activities, such as clubs, sporting events, and cultural activities, providing an engaging mix of social and academic pursuits.

WPI encourages its students to work in groups, not just on class projects, but also on real-world problems. This highlights the institute's project-based curriculum, which not only permits a broad understanding of multiple disciplines but also offers opportunities for students to immerse themselves in their areas of interest and develop a unique, well-rounded skill set.

However, the workload at WPI can be demanding due to its project-based curriculum and rigorous academic standards. It operates on a seven-week term system known as "quarters," during which students typically take three courses. The pace is fast, and the content is immersive, meaning students have a deeper dive into their subjects over a shorter period. Still, many students find this system beneficial as it allows them to focus on fewer subjects at a time, and the project-oriented approach provides tangible, real-world experience.

On-campus living is vibrant, with the vast majority of students—about 81%—residing on campus. There are many dining options available, and the dining service prides itself on its sustainability practices.

In terms of inclusion, WPI places a high priority on diversity and offers numerous resources dedicated to fostering an inclusive environment. These efforts include various cultural clubs, a dedicated diversity and inclusion office, and many events intended to celebrate and appreciate different cultures.

Regarding recreational activities, the university offers a variety of intramural sports, a state-of-the-art sports and recreation center, and many clubs and organizations. With over 235 student clubs and organizations ranging from academic and professional groups to recreational sports, art, and cultural organizations, there's something for everyone.

In summary, WPI's student life is a balance of intense academics and a welcoming, active campus environment. Though the workload can be rigorous due to the quarter system and project-based curriculum, the school's inclusive culture and wealth of extracurriculars can make for an enriching and rewarding experience.
