Advice on finding a first job with just a high school diploma?

Graduating this year and not sure about going to college right away. I'm in Boston and wondering what job opportunities are available for someone with only a high school diploma. Any fields or industries I should look into?

It's perfectly fine making the decision not to attend college right away. Taking some time to work, explore different industries, and gain experience can be a very wise choice. With only a high school diploma, you still have multiple diverse sectors open to you with entry-level positions.

In Boston, healthcare and technology are two of the city's dominant industries. Hospitals like Massachusetts General Hospital, Boston Children's Hospital, and others, often have positions for individuals with high school backgrounds like patient service coordinators, office assists, or medical receptionists.

The tech sector likewise offers opportunities such as data entry, customer service, or roles in sales or business development within a tech company. Though many higher-level tech jobs require specific degrees or coding knowledge, these other positions can provide a great introduction to the industry.

Also prominent in Boston is the finance industry. Many financial institutions have positions like bank teller, customer service representative, or data entry clerk that require only a high school diploma.

Apart from these, other sectors to consider include the government and public sector jobs, retail, hospitality, and food service. Each of these industries has entry-level positions that require little to no previous experience.

Regardless of where you choose to apply, consider taking advantage of your school's career center or a job placement agency in the Boston area. They can connect you with potential employers and guide you in preparing a resume and for interviews.

Remember, choosing to work straight out of high school can teach you valuable skills such as time management, teamwork, and communication, which you can translate into any future career path or study if you choose to attend college later down the line. Just make sure you're continuing to learn and grow in whatever job you take on.
