Best Schools in Pennsylvania – What Are the Options?

I'm looking into schools in Pennsylvania. What are the top universities and colleges in the state? Interested in both academics and student life.

Pennsylvania is home to a wide range of impressive colleges, each with its own strengths and unique campus cultures. Unquestionably, two of the most renowned and academically rigorous institutions in the state are the University of Pennsylvania (also known as Penn) and Carnegie Mellon University.

Penn, located in Philadelphia, is part of the Ivy League and it's known for its strong programs across various disciplines including business (Wharton School), medical and health sciences, and social sciences. With respect to student life, Penn offers a vibrant city campus with over 600 student clubs, a robust athletic program and it's well regarded for initiating the University City District project that has developed the neighborhood around the campus.

Meanwhile, Carnegie Mellon, sitting in Pittsburgh, is renowned for its strong programs in Computer Science, Engineering, and the Arts. Despite its reputation as a technology-focused school, CMU has a thriving student life scene with over 400 student organizations and specialized residential communities. Students also appreciate the school’s collaboration with Pittsburgh, utilizing the city as an extended classroom.

In addition to these, other notable universities include Lehigh University known for its strong Engineering and Business programs and Swarthmore College, a premier liberal arts college with a focus on undergraduate education. Lehigh, located in Bethlehem, boasts a stunning campus and a spirited Greek life; while Swarthmore offers an intimate, lush campus setting and highly customizable majors.

Moving to state public universities, Pennsylvania State University (Penn State) and the University of Pittsburgh (Pitt) are attractive options. Penn State, based in University Park, PA, is well-regarded for its Engineering, Business and Education programs, as well as a zealous spirit for college athletics. Pitt, located in Pittsburgh alongside Carnegie Mellon, has strong programs in Health and Medical Sciences, and is noted for its urban campus environment.

Each of these colleges offers high-quality academics as well as vibrant student life activities, and it'd be helpful to consider what you're looking for in terms of size, location, and areas of study when making your decision.
