How does UC Merced fare in rankings?

I'm considering applying to UC Merced but I'm really curious about its rankings. How does it compare to other UCs, and is it a good choice for undergrad?

UC Merced, while one of the newer members of the University of California system, is a rapidly growing institution which has been garnering more attention recently. In terms of its rankings, it's important to understand that rankings can vary greatly depending on the source, as different publications use different criteria to evaluate universities. That being said, as of 2024, US News & World Report ranked UC Merced as #58 in National Universities.

Compared to other UCs, UC Merced might not rank as highly but that doesn't necessarily hinder the quality of education you can receive there. It offers a unique, intimate educational experience due to its smaller size, which can offer more individual attention from professors. Remember, it's not so much about the ranking of the institution but the quality of the department for your intended major, the opportunities for research or internships, and how well the school fits with your personal and academic needs.

Given that it's the first American research university of the 21st century, UC Merced has state-of-the-art facilities and is particularly noted for its research opportunities and commitment to sustainability. Therefore, if those factors weigh into your decision-making process, UC Merced could certainly be a good choice, regardless of its rankings.

Your college decision should always be a personal one, and it's recommended you consider the opportunities a school provides in relation to your career interests, alongside the campus size, location, and community which will greatly impact your college experience. So, UC Merced certainly could be a good choice for your undergraduate studies, depends largely on your preferences and academic goals.
