Advice for Getting Your First Job in High School

I'm a junior and considering applying for my first job. Any tips on crafting a resume without much experience, or on interviewing for an entry-level position? What should I expect from my first job?

Great decision on deciding to apply for a job during high school! Jobs can provide valuable experience and help you start developing professional skills.

When it comes to crafting a resume without much work experience, focus on the experiences and skills that you do have. This can include extracurricular activities, volunteer work, or projects you completed in your classes. For instance, if you were a member of the school's Science Olympiad team, you can emphasize skills such as teamwork, problem-solving, or leadership.

Also, include any technical skills you've acquired. Are you fluent in a second language or adept with technologies such as Microsoft Office? Do you code or design websites in your spare time? These are valuable assets, so make sure to highlight them.

Interviews for entry-level positions usually revolve around gauging your soft skills, reliability, and willingness to learn. Prepare to share examples of your teamwork skills, times when you've shown responsibility, and situations where you've had to learn something new quickly.

As for what to expect, keep in mind your first job is a learning experience more than anything. It may not be your dream job, but every job can teach you transferable skills such as communication, time management, and problem-solving. You'll likely start with simple tasks and as you prove your competence, more responsibilities will be handed to you.

Make sure to show up on time, complete tasks to the best of your ability, and have a positive attitude. It's also important to communicate effectively with your supervisor, whether it's about your work schedule, managing tasks, or asking for help when needed.

Remember that everyone starts somewhere and it’s okay to make mistakes in your first job. The most important thing is that you learn from them. Good luck on your job hunt!
