What are some examples of Tier 1-2 extracurriculars?

I've been hearing a lot about Tier 1 and Tier 2 extracurriculars in relation to college apps. Can anyone give me examples of activities that would fall into these categories? I'm just wondering if there's anything I should consider participating in to bolster my application. Thanks!

Sure, I can give you some examples of Tier 1 and Tier 2 extracurriculars. Remember that the goal is to showcase exceptional achievement, leadership, and dedication.

Tier 1 extracurriculars are rare activities showing exceptional achievement or leadership at the national or international level. Examples include:

1. Winning a prestigious national award, such as the Regeneron Science Talent Search or Congressional Art Competition.

2. Qualifying for and participating in international competitions such as the International Math Olympiad, International Biology Olympiad, or International Physics Olympiad.

3. Being recognized at the national level for artistic achievement, like being selected for the National Youth Orchestra or having your work showcased in a national exhibit.

4. Creating a successful startup or non-profit organization with significant national or global impact.

5. Achieving national rankings in a competitive sport, such as being in the top 10 nationally in track and field or swimming.

Tier 2 extracurriculars are a little more common but still showcase high levels of achievement and leadership. Examples include:

1. Serving as student body president or class president at your high school.

2. Being selected for a state-level arts or music group, such as state orchestra, choir, or theater competitions.

3. Being a top-ranked athlete within your state for a competitive sport.

4. Creating and leading a popular community-oriented initiative or club that gains significant recognition within the region.

5. Holding a regional leadership position in a national organization like DECA, FBLA, or Model UN.

It's important to remember that colleges value genuine passion and dedication, so focus on pursuing activities that genuinely interest you and where you can make a meaningful impact. Simply participating in these activities for the sake of college admissions might not bring the desired results. Instead, try to find your niche and excel in areas that truly matter to you. Best of luck!
