Which colleges have strong performing arts programs?

I've been involved with theater and dance throughout high school, and I'm thinking about pursuing this in college. Which schools are known for their performing arts programs? Any insight on colleges with great theater and dance majors?

There are a number of schools that have excellent programs in the performing arts.

Purchase College of the State University of New York serves as a well-regarded public option for performing arts. Students can major in acting or dance and can also take courses in design/tech, drama studies, playwriting, and production.

If you're considering private institutions, Juilliard School and Carnegie Mellon University are two of the most prestigious schools for performing arts in the country. Juilliard, located in New York City, offers a BFA in Dance and Drama, and Carnegie Mellon, in Pittsburgh, has undergraduate programs in Acting, Musical Theatre, and Dance, among others.

Another top choice is the University of Southern California, which has a highly renowned School of Dramatic Arts. Here, you can take part in various performance and production opportunities.

Finally, Northwestern University in Illinois also provides a strong theater program. It's known for its diverse range of study—from acting and music theatre to dance, directing, playwriting, and more.

Now, remember, the best school for you will depend not only on the strength of the program, but also on the overall fit of the school. Be sure to consider factors like location, size, academic offerings, and campus culture, in addition to the strength of the performing arts program, when making your decision. So do your research and, if possible, visit the campuses or participate in virtual tours to get a feel for the environments. Good luck in your college search!
