What should I include in my first job resume as a high school student?

I'm a high school junior trying to put together a resume for my first job. What kind of things should I include on my resume when I don't have much work experience yet?

Definitely! As a high school student, there are a few sections that are essential for your resume:

1. Contact Information: Begin by including your full name, phone number, and a professional email address. If it bears your school's domain, that's completely acceptable.

2. Education: You'll want to include information about your high school, and don't forget to mention your GPA, especially if it's particularly strong.

3. Skills: You can list any skills you have developed that are relevant to the job you are applying for, such as proficiency in a foreign language, computer skills, communication skills, etc.

4. Extracurricular Activities: Jobs understand that high school students may not have much, if any, professional work experience. Instead, you can list any clubs, sports, or extracurricular activities you’ve participated in. These activities can demonstrate skills like leadership, time management, teamwork, and perseverance.

5. Volunteer Experience: If you've done any community service, it's a great addition. It showcases a willingness to give back to your community and take initiative.

6. Awards/Honors: Scholars program, National Honor Society, science fair awards, or a place in the district orchestra-- anything that shows off your academic or extracurricular accomplishments could be relevant.

7. Coursework: Any relevant or advanced classes you've taken can illustrate your commitment to your education and particular interests.

8. References: If you feel comfortable, you could provide a reference from a teacher, mentor, or coach. Do ask for their permission first and provide their best contact information.

Remember, the main thing is to highlight your strengths, dedication, and the skills you've acquired through school and extracurricular activities to demonstrate your ability to perform the job you're targeting. Good luck!
