What government jobs can high school seniors apply for?

I'm a high school senior trying to figure out my options right now. Are there government jobs available for someone who's about to graduate? If so, what kinds of positions should I be looking into and what's the application process like?

There are actually quite a few opportunities in the public sector for high school graduates. Some of these roles involve administrative work, maintenance and repair, or security and protective services. One great place you should check is USAJobs, the United States federal government's official job site. You can filter by education level and find roles that require just a high school diploma.

Keep in mind, though, that many government jobs require U.S. citizenship, and depending on the role, a clean criminal record and the ability to pass a drug test. Some examples of government jobs that tend to often have opportunities for high school graduates include Postal Service Workers, Forest and Conservation Workers, and Administrative Assistants.

The application process can vary widely based on the agency and job, but it generally involves submitting an application or resume, and sometimes a tailored cover letter. Some jobs may also require you to answer additional questions about your experience and qualifications. Government job announcements usually clearly outline the duties, qualification requirements, and application instructions, so make sure to read those thoroughly. Don't be deterred by the process, it is designed to ensure a thorough and fair evaluation of candidates.

I would also suggest looking into internships, apprenticeships, or job training programs targeted at high school graduates. These types of programs can be a great way to gain experience and get your foot in the door. For instance, the Pathways Program for students and recent graduates to federal careers might be a particularly good fit for you. These opportunities can offer valuable real-world experience and could potentially lead to a full-time job offer down the line.

Remember that while exploring job options, it's essential to consider your long-term career goals. If there are certain areas that interest you more, try to find relevant opportunities in those fields to build a foundation for your future.

Good luck in your job search!
