What high school-friendly trade jobs are out there?

I'm a high school student considering trade jobs after graduation. Are there any trades I can explore now while I'm still in school? Would love insights into some entry paths or programs I should look into.

It's great that you're interested in exploring trade jobs whilst still in high school. Let's talk about a few trades that have accessible pathways for high school students.

1. Electrical Technology: Many vocational high schools offer electrics programs on a part-time basis, where students can learn the basics such as circuitry, wiring, etc. With further training post-high school, you could become an electrician or electrical technician.

2. Auto Mechanics: Some high schools have automotive programs that allow students to learn how to maintain and repair automobiles. It gives basic knowledge of engines, suspensions, and other vehicle systems. After high school, you could further your training at a specialized trade school or even start an apprenticeship right away.

3. Plumbing: Plumbing can start with basic courses available at high schools, community colleges, or trade schools. Following high school, you will need to complete an apprenticeship to fully become a plumber.

4. Culinary Arts: If you have a passion for cooking, you could consider culinary arts. Many high schools have home economics classes that can lay the foundation. Additionally, there are also vocational high schools that offer comprehensive culinary arts programs.

5. Information Technology (IT): With our increasingly digital world, IT is a rapidly growing field. There are many entry-level roles like help desk technician that you might be qualified for with just a certification and your high school diploma.

6. Welding: High schools offering vocational training may include courses in welding. A skilled trade, it offers high earning potential and opportunities for specialization post-high-school through further certifications or apprenticeships.

Remember to dive into these fields while you're still in high school, then continue your education through trade school, community college, or an apprenticeship program after graduation. Research options in your area, connect with local trade professionals for shadowing or internships, and embrace the opportunity to explore different trades while you're still in high school. This will help set you up for a successful career in the trades.
