I'm considering applying to USC and would love to get a sense of the student life there. How would you describe the social scene, clubs, or events on campus? Any tips on getting involved?
USC offers a densely-populated and engaging campus life that many students appreciate. The campus itself is dynamic, constantly buzzing with activity. You'll find that there is always something happening - be it guest lectures, theater performances, film screenings, or concerts.
Socially, USC is diverse and inclusive. It prides itself on the number of student organizations that it hosts - around 1,000 last time I checked. There's something for everyone, from academic and professional clubs to cultural organizations, art clubs, and even outdoor adventure groups. I'd recommend that once you're accepted, you check out the involvement fair where many of these clubs showcase their activities.
USC is also noted for its robust Greek life community, with a significant percentage of undergraduates participating. However, it’s not the be-all and end-all of USC social life. There are ample opportunities to socialize outside of Greek life with dorm events, clubs, sports games, and the plethora of events hosted on campus.
Sports play a big part in USC culture. There's a deep sense of school spirit, especially around football season; game days in the Coliseum are major events that bring the whole community together.
In addition, the location of USC's campus in Los Angeles provides students with ample internship opportunities, access to a rich arts scene, and a variety of adventurous activities. While campus security is a concern that is often raised due to USC's downtown location, the school has implemented multiple safety measures, like an all-day shuttle service and campus patrol, to ensure student safety.
Notably, many students volunteer in the surrounding community, giving you an excellent opportunity to give back while also understanding the broader context of the city.
Finally, to get involved, my top tip would be to not be afraid to explore. Try out new clubs, take classes that interest you, and don't hesitate to strike up a conversation with someone new. USC is all about building relationships and connections, both on and off-campus.
