Is aerospace engineering at UCLA a good choice?

I'm really into space and thinking of majoring in aerospace engineering. Does anyone have insights about the program at UCLA? How's the coursework and opportunities for internships or research there?

UCLA indeed offers a strong Aerospace Engineering program. Although it may not be ranked as one of the absolute top in the country, UCLA's engineering school overall is highly-ranked, which can give you a sense of the educational quality you'll receive.

As a student, you'll take a variety of courses in physics, math, and engineering principles; these classes will provide you with a strong theoretical foundation. Apart from these core courses, UCLA's Aerospace Engineering program also offers courses related to propulsion, fluid mechanics, and control systems, among other areas. You also have some flexibility to specialize your studies around your interests, whether that's spacecraft design, propulsion systems, or something else entirely.

In terms of hands-on experience, UCLA offers several opportunities. There's the Engineering Learning Community, which can help you find research positions and fellowships. UCLA also has numerous engineering clubs, including those specifically focused on aerospace. For example, the Rocket Project at UCLA provides a platform for students to gain real-world experience by designing, building, and launching liquid-fueled rockets.

As for internships, Los Angeles is a major hub for the aerospace industry. Many prestigious companies such as Northrop Grumman, Raytheon, SpaceX, and Boeing have offices in the region, opening up potential internship and job opportunities for UCLA students.

Though UCLA's program should provide you with a strong foundation, definitely compare it to other programs you're considering. Every school has its own strengths and fits differently with each student's aspirations and learning style.
