Can someone explain the UNC schools system?

I'm trying to understand how the whole UNC school system works. There are so many campuses and I'm a bit confused about the differences and how they function together. Could anyone explain the basics to me?

The UNC system, or the University of North Carolina system, comprises a public, multi-campus university system that includes 16 universities across the state of North Carolina. There's one high school as well, the North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics. The system is overseen by the UNC Board of Governors.

Each university within the system operates semi-independently, meaning they each have their admission criteria, campus culture, unique academic programs, and sports teams. Additionally, each university has its chancellor who reports to the UNC system president. For example, UNC Chapel Hill, the first public university in the United States, is known for its strong health sciences and journalism programs, while NC State University is renowned for its engineering and agricultural sciences.

Despite their independent operations, the schools within the UNC system share their commitment to accessible and high-quality education. They also often collaborate in research efforts and educational initiatives.

The UNC system is extensive and diverse, and that's one of its main strengths! The various schools allow for a wide range of academic opportunities for students all across North Carolina and beyond, each catering to different career paths and individual student needs.
