What jobs are available for people with a high school diploma in DC?

I'm looking at possible job opportunities in Washington, D.C., for after high school. I'd like to know what kinds of jobs are open to someone with just a diploma. Any tips on industries to explore?

While a high school diploma may limit some options compared to having a college degree, that's not to say there aren't plenty of job industries to explore in Washington D.C.

1. Hospitality: The hospitality industry is vast and covers positions in hotels, restaurants, and tourism-related businesses. Jobs here usually do not require a degree, but rather a focus on customer service skills. Examples can include roles in front desk operations, housekeeping, serving, or even tour-guiding.

2. Retail: This sector offers opportunities ranging from entry-level sales positions to managerial roles. Some larger retail companies even offer management training programs for high school diploma holders.

3. Administrative Support: Many businesses and government agencies need receptionists, administrative assistants, data entry clerks, and other support staff. These jobs require organizational skills and a basic understanding of computer operations.

4. Construction and Skilled Trades: Positions in this field often start as apprenticeships where you'll learn the particular trade while working and may eventually get a certification. Examples include electricians, plumbers, or HVAC technicians.

5. Public Service: Positions such as emergency dispatchers, correctional officers, and certain civil service roles just require a high school diploma.

6. Transportation and Delivery Services: The demand for delivery drivers and warehouse personnel has exploded with the rise of online shopping. Entry-level positions typically require only a high school diploma.

It's important to also note that even if a job doesn't require a degree, further training or certification can often help you move up or secure higher pay. It's always a good idea to look into potential opportunities for growth within any job you're considering.
