What engineering jobs can you get with just a high school diploma?

I'd love to get into engineering, but college might not be an option for me right away. Are there any job opportunities in engineering that a high school graduate can get into? Internships or entry-level positions, maybe?

Certainly, it's possible to start a career path in engineering without a bachelor's degree, and there are several opportunities available for high school graduates. However, do keep in mind while these positions might not require a degree, they likely involve learning on-the-job, attending training programs, or getting certifications for specialized technical skills.

One possibility is starting as an Engineering Technician. These roles perform tasks to assist Engineers in their job, including setting up machinery or equipment, monitoring systems, and troubleshooting technical issues. This role can extend across industries, such as civil, electrical, or mechanical engineering, depending on your specific interests.

Another pathway could be through becoming a Drafter. Drafters use software to convert the designs of engineers and architects into technical drawings and plans. Workers specialize in architectural, civil, electrical, or mechanical drafting and use technical drawings to help design everything from microchips to skyscrapers.

You might also want to consider the field of telecommunications. As a Telecommunications Equipment Installer and Repairer, you would set up and maintain devices or equipment that carry communications signals, connect to telephone lines, or access the internet.

Internships or apprenticeships can also be excellent ways to get your foot in the door. Companies may offer such programs to high school graduates, where you can learn from experienced professionals and gain practical skills.

It's also worth mentioning that with the growing prominence of online education, some platforms offer engineering-related courses for free or a lower cost than traditional colleges. Gaining certificates from these courses would strengthen your credentials.

Lastly, understand the field of engineering is quite vast and diverse, so it's crucial to research the specific area you're interested in to understand the requirements and competencies involved better.
