Can anyone tell me about Bard College?

I'm exploring liberal arts colleges, and Bard College has caught my eye. What's the vibe there, and how challenging are the academics? I'd appreciate any feedback from current or former students!

Bard College, located in Annandale-on-Hudson, New York, is well-suited to students who are self-directed and excited to engage in the liberal arts. The school embodies a blend of traditional liberal arts education and progressive, hands-on learning. Known for the immersive and rigorous 'Language and Thinking' program that first-year students take before their fall semester officially begins, Bard sets a high standard of intellectual exploration from the start.

Although small, Bard has a vibrant and diverse student body. Given its location in a rural setting, a lot of student life is based on campus. Most students live on campus all four years, and there's a genuine sense of community as a result. There's also a vibrant arts scene. The campus boasts impressive facilities, including the Fisher Center for Performing Arts, designed by architect Frank Gehry. There's also a strong push for civic engagement, with programs such as the Bard Prison Initiative exemplifying this ethos.

Academically, Bard is known for its Writing and Science programs, and it also has strong offerings in the Arts. Humanities is another field where Bard shines, and it offers academic programs that promote multidisciplinary study. For example, their 'Moderation' process requires second-year students to present a body of work and their future study plan to a board of professors. This encourages students to take control and direction over their education.

Be aware that Bard's academics are challenging. The level of writing and research expected can be intense. But if you're the kind of student who appreciates smaller classes and the opportunity to delve deep into your chosen field, you might find Bard to be a good fit. Ultimately, Bard offers a unique educational experience wherein students are urged to not just consume information passively, but to engage with it and apply it to broader societal issues.
