How is the engineering program at Cooper Union?

I'm considering applying to Cooper Union for engineering. I've heard it's pretty competitive, but is it worth it? What makes their engineering program stand out compared to other schools in New York?

Cooper Union's Albert Nerken School of Engineering is indeed highly regarded. Several factors contribute to its stand-out reputation.

Firstly, the size of the school allows for a low student-faculty ratio, meaning that you'll get personalized attention and will be able to connect with professors easily. This can also mean access to research opportunities, even at the undergraduate level, which is a significant advantage.

Another distinguishing feature of Cooper Union's engineering program is its curriculum. It offers a comprehensive approach to foundational engineering principles, but also has areas of specialization, allowing students to delve deeper as they progress through the program. They offer degrees in Civil, Chemical, Electrical, and Mechanical Engineering which give you a broad foundation before selecting a focus.

Cooper Union is also known for its commitment to experiential learning. The school places emphasis on lab work, hands-on projects, and internships—all of which combine to provide a more practical understanding of engineering beyond the (also important) theory taught in lectures.

Finally, its location in the heart of New York City's vibrant, busy tech scene, offers students connections to internships, networking opportunities, and potential jobs post-graduation.

Of course, it's imperative that you research and visit the school (if possible) to understand if the environment, culture, and academic approach align with your learning style and career goals. It's supportive and ambitious, but also rigorous and fast-paced.

In comparison to other schools in New York, Cooper Union is distinguished mostly by its size and comprehensive approach to engineering education. Larger institutions in the city, such as NYU, have a variety of engineering disciplines and related fields to study, but may not offer the same level of hands-on, individualized learning experience.

Remember, the best engineering program is one that fits your academic and personal goals!
