Which universities in Pennsylvania should I consider?

I'm thinking about applying to colleges in Pennsylvania. I'm interested in a range of options including larger research universities and smaller liberal arts colleges. What are some good schools to look into?

Pennsylvania offers a fantastic range of both large research-based universities and smaller liberal arts colleges.

On the larger, research-based end of the spectrum, University of Pennsylvania (often referred to as UPenn) is an Ivy League institution known for its offerings in Business, Medicine, and Liberal Arts and Sciences. Then you have Pennsylvania State University (aka Penn State), which is a public research university with robust programs across various fields — from Engineering to Visual and Performing Arts.

Carnegie Mellon University is another research-focused institution recognized primarily for its STEM and Fine Arts programs, notably in Computer Science, Information Systems, and Drama. But it also has strong programs in many other disciplines.

For smaller liberal arts colleges, Swarthmore College is a member of the Tri-College Consortium, famous for its intensive intellectual programs and emphasis on social justice. Bucknell University also offers a liberal arts education with the resources of bigger universities, including Engineering and Management colleges.

Franklin and Marshall College has a heavy focus on undergraduate research even within its liberal arts framework. For those interested in a religiously-affiliated college, Villanova University is an excellent Catholic University committed to comprehensive education.

And don't forget Haverford College, a small liberal arts college known for its Honor Code, collaborative community, and strong programs in social science fields like Political Science and Psychology.

Lafayette College combines a liberal arts education with a range of engineering programs, providing a unique academic mix that's great for students interested in either or both realms of study.

Depending on your specific interests, academic record, and other preferences, one or more of these schools could be a great fit for you. Remember, it's best to research each prospective school thoroughly, especially in terms of specific programs, campus culture, and financial aid.
