Inside Scoop on American Academy for Dramatic Arts

Has anyone attended the American Academy for Dramatic Arts? I'm passionate about theater and considering this school, but I'd like to hear about the training quality and overall experience there. Is it worth it?

I understand you're debating whether to apply to the American Academy for Dramatic Arts and you're seeking first-hand knowledge about the institution. Although I can't grant you direct personal insight, I can share with you some common feedback from students who enrolled there.

Many students speak highly of the rigorous training and focus on theatrical art at the Academy. It is renowned for its strong emphasis on basic craft which includes voice, speech, and movement classes. Students also appreciate the professional ethos instilled by the experienced faculty, many of whom are working actors or directors. They note that the Industry showcase at the end of the second year plays a significant role in launching their career as it puts them directly in front of casting directors, agents, and scouts.

However, just like any institution, there are also potential drawbacks. A common critique is that there is not much of a traditional college feel or campus life, as the Academy does not offer non-performance based or general education classes. It's intensive and industry-focused, which may not be for everybody.

In terms of whether it is "worth it," this largely depends on what you're looking for in a theater education. If you thrive in a structured, intensive environment and are eager to make professional connections, then AADA could be a worthwhile choice. However, if you're interested in a more traditional college experience with a broader range of studies, you might want to look into BA programs at universities with strong theater departments.

Remember, it's always useful to try and get in touch with current students or alumni through social media or networking events to hear more about their experiences at AADA. Hearing from people who have been in your shoes can provide valuable perspectives that will help guide your decision.
