Applying to the University of Florida—any tips?

I'm about to start my application for the University of Florida. Does anyone have tips or advice on making the application strong? Specific things they might be looking for?

The University of Florida (UF) is a competitive institution and they look for students who can thrive academically and contribute significantly to their community. To strengthen your application, here are a few tips:

1. Emphasize Academic Strength: This is top-tier, and a strong GPA (weighted) and rigorous course load are important. For UF, aim to exceed their average admitted student profile, to increase your chances of acceptance.

2. Highlight Your Extracurriculars: UF values students who bring diverse experiences to their campus. Aim to demonstrate involvement in 8-10 clubs, sports, or organizations throughout high school, with a focus on a few where you've shown significant commitment, leadership or achievement. UF particularly values Tier 1 and 2 activities, that show high levels of achievement or leadership, on a state, national, or international level.

3. Craft Compelling Essays: UF requires one main essay along with several short answer questions, all built around the theme "Tell Your Story". Avoid common cliches and opt to share anecdotes that highlight personal growth or a unique perspective. If you faced any particular challenges, describing how you overcame them could make for a powerful narrative.

4. Consider Your Major: UF tends to be more selective for certain programs. If you're applying to a competitive major, demonstrate your interest and background in this field. If you've undertaken related projects or internships, or held leadership positions in related clubs, be sure to highlight these.

5. Seek Strong Letters of Recommendation: UF gives you the option to send up to three, although it's not required. If you choose to submit, consider teachers who can give a detailed account of your academic strengths and personal qualities. A recommendation from someone with a connection to the university could also be beneficial.

6. Show Specific Interest: Demonstrating specific interest in UF—through the essays, for example— could enhance your application, as it suggests you're likely to attend if admitted. Try to mention unique courses, professors, research opportunities, clubs or traditions that attract you to UF.

Remember, every part of your application is an opportunity to tell the admission committee more about who you are, what makes you unique, and what you can add to the UF community. Make the most out of it! Good luck!
