Can anyone recommend test-optional colleges?

I'm not thrilled with my test scores and want to apply to test-optional colleges. Which schools are good options for someone looking to emphasize grades and extracurriculars instead?

Sure, there are quite a few prominent and selective colleges that continue to be test-optional for the 2024-2025 application cycle. Let's start with some of the Ivies and other top-tier schools.

1. University of Chicago: This prestigious university values students' capacity for critical thinking and analysis over standardized tests.

2. Columbia University: Known for its focused Core Curriculum, Columbia evaluates students holistically, looking beyond test scores.

3. Princeton University: Another Ivy League institution that remains test-optional, placing a greater emphasis on academic performance and unique personal qualities.

4. Stanford University: Despite having a low acceptance rate, Stanford's holistic review process takes into account all aspects of your application beyond just test scores.

5. Johns Hopkins University: Apart from academic rigor, Johns Hopkins values leadership and service, both of which can be exemplified outside of standardized tests.

6. New York University (NYU): NYU adopted a test-optional policy, which allows students to demonstrate their academic abilities in different ways.

7. University of Pennsylvania (UPenn): UPenn is test-optional and evaluates students based on their academic performance, extracurricular involvement, and letters of recommendation.

8. Cornell University: Cornell's decision to stay test-optional allows for a more comprehensive review of applicants. However, they will require standardized test scores again for the 2025-2026 application cycle.

Outside of the Ivies and other highly selective schools, there are strong test-optional institutions in different parts of the country:

1. University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill: Known for its robust undergraduate research opportunities, UNC Chapel Hill looks beyond test scores by focusing on both academic and personal qualifications.

2. University of Michigan: With high-ranking programs across the board, UMich values a diverse, well-rounded class and in-progress academic strength from high school experiences.

3. University of Southern California (USC): USC is known for its vibrant campus culture and extensive academic programs. They consider all parts of an applicant's profile when making admission decisions.

4. Loyola University Chicago: Loyola emphasizes a holistic application review process and does not require an application fee.

These are just a sample of test-optional schools, and it is always crucial to research each school's policies individually. Remember that even though these schools are foregoing test scores, the rest of your application still needs to be strong to stand out. That includes but is not limited to, having challenging coursework in high school, a strong GPA, glowing recommendation letters, and well-rounded extracurricular activities.
