How does an IEP affect support at work after high school?

I'm about to graduate high school and I have an IEP. I'm curious about how this might translate into getting extra help or accommodations in the workplace. Can anyone share experiences or advice on transitioning from school support to work support?

Transitioning from high school to the workplace can definitely feel like a big step, but there are legal protections and resources in place to support you just as in the educational setting.

Your Individualized Education Program (IEP) won't directly carry over to the workplace, as it's part of the educational system and awarded under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). However, the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act protect workers with disabilities in the workplace. These laws ensure you will not be discriminated against due to your disability and allow you to request reasonable accommodations to help you perform your job effectively.

To receive accommodations under the ADA, it's recommended you disclose your disability to your employer and provide documentation if necessary. The Job Accommodation Network (JAN) is a great resource for understanding how to request accommodations and what types might be available to you. For instance, if your IEP provided extra time for tasks, a similar accommodation could be a flexible schedule in the workplace.

Remember, it's important to advocate for yourself and your needs. Being proactive and open about your needs with your employer is often the key first step. Understand your rights, and don't hesitate to utilize resources available to you.
