Can I get an engineering job with just a high school diploma?

I'm really interested in engineering but I'm not planning on college immediately. Are there any engineering job opportunities available for just high school graduates? I'd appreciate any advice on entry-level roles or potential internships.

While it's true that some engineering positions require a bachelor's degree, there are still opportunities for people with only a high school diploma. It largely depends on the level of depth and technicality demanded by the job. As an entry-level candidate, the key is to target positions where you can apply the knowledge you already have and continue growing.

Look for positions such as engineering technicians or assistants. These roles often involve supporting engineers by setting up equipment, conducting tests, repairing components, and maintaining records. You'll need basic understanding of mathematical principles and hands-on technical schools, which can be obtained in high school or vocational programs. Manufacturing or industrial maintenance technician roles might also be a good fit.

Internships and apprenticeships can be an excellent way to get started. Many companies offer paid internships that do not always require a degree and serve as a stepping stone to entry-level positions. You can gain valuable work experience, practical skills, and make professional connections.

Remember that engineering is a vast field, consisting of different branches such as civil, mechanical, electrical, and others. Each branch may have its own specific requirements, so once you've figured out which branch interests you the most, do some research to understand what job prospects and expectations exist in that particular area. Lastly, although it's possible to start without a degree, earning one can significantly increase your growth potential and job opportunities in the future. You may want to consider part-time or distance education while working to further your knowledge base. Good luck with your career adventure!
