High school student nursing jobs?

I'm a high school junior interested in pursuing a career in nursing. Are there any nursing-related jobs or volunteer opportunities for high school students that could give me experience and help build my resume?

Pursuing a career in nursing is a commendable goal! The good news is there are high school-level opportunities that could give you an introductory experience to the nursing and broader healthcare field.

For instance, you may try volunteering in local hospitals, nursing homes, or healthcare centers. Many of these facilities offer volunteer programs where you can observe and assist the nursing staff, helping with tasks such as transporting patients, stocking supplies, and providing companionship to patients.

Moreover, there are healthcare-related summer programs designed specifically for high school students. Some are directly tied to nursing, while others expose students to various aspects of healthcare. Programs such as the Summer Medical and Research Training Program, or the Future Nurses Club, could be beneficial. Keep in mind, the best programs are often highly selective and may require an application and interview process.

In addition to this, you could consider getting certified as a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) or Emergency Medical Technician (EMT), depending on the age requirements in your state. Both of these roles can provide you with hands-on patient care experience and can be pursued alongside your high school or college studies.

Furthermore, having a part-time job in a pharmacy, as a caregiver, in a medical office or even in a health-oriented nonprofit might not be nursing-specific, but could still give you relevant experience.

Remember, any role you assume in healthcare will provide you not only with experience but also with a chance to make sure that this career path is the right one for you. Each of these opportunities will be valuable as you apply to nursing school down the line.

Start by researching hospital volunteer programs and healthcare-related summer programs in your area, and from there, you can look into the various certification programs if you're still interested. Good luck!
