Tips for getting a first job in high school?

I'm a junior trying to land my first job, and I'm not sure where to start. Any advice on how to make myself stand out when I don't have much (or any) experience yet?

Absolutely, there's a lot you can do to present yourself as a competitive candidate even if you don't have formal work experience. Here are a few tips.

Start by identifying the skills that make you a good fit for the types of jobs high school students typically hold. These could include customer service roles, food service positions, retail jobs, etc. For these entry-level roles, employers usually look for soft skills like communication abilities, teamwork, punctuality, and reliability rather than specific job experience. Begin cultivating these skills and be prepared to discuss examples where you've utilized them - in school, extracurricular activities, or even with family responsibilities.

Consider putting together a resume. While it might seem odd as a high school student with limited experience, a resume can help organize your skills, achievements, and activities in a professional format. Include your GPA (if it's strong), any classes directly relevant to the job you're interested in, and extracurriculars that have allowed you to demonstrate responsibility, leadership, teamwork, and other desirable traits. Even babysitting, tutoring, or yard work can be framed in a professional light.

Networking can be a big help. Let your friends, family, teachers, and others know that you're interested in finding a job. Personal referrals can make a difference for these kinds of roles, and someone might know of a place that's hiring.

Don't be afraid to start small with entry-level roles. The goal of a first job is often to learn basic professional skills and norms, and you don't need a glamorous position to achieve this.

Finally, present a professional image. Dress neatly for interviews, follow up promptly, and exhibit politeness and respect. Do a little research about the company and bring a few questions for your interview - this shows you're engaged and serious about the opportunity.

Hope these tips are helpful to you. Best of luck with your job search!
