High school internships vs. jobs: What's better?

As I plan my summer, I'm torn between applying for internships or regular jobs. How does each option benefit a high school student's future—especially when thinking about college applications?

Both internships and jobs can be great experiences for high school students and offer unique benefits. The decision ultimately depends on your interests, what skills you want to gain, and what you hope to present on your college applications.

Internships, especially those related to a prospective major or career path, can offer hands-on experience in your field of interest. This could lead you to confirm your passion for a certain field, or conversely, help you realize it's not the right path for you. On a college application, relevant internships could signal a strong interest and dedication towards your intended major, which could be a compelling addition to your application. For instance, if you're planning to study computer science, an internship with a local tech firm can demonstrate hands-on exposure and prior experience.

Jobs, on the other hand, can give you a wider range of practical skills regardless of the field. They offer a chance to develop key employability skills like teamwork, problem-solving, customer service, and time management. Earning your own money can also teach you valuable lessons about financial responsibility. Lastly, holding down a regular job can demonstrate your reliability and commitment, traits that are appealing to college admissions officers.

So if you are sure about your career field, pursuing an internship may provide more direct advantages. A job, however, might better suit you if you're unsure of your future career or academic intentions, or if you want to gain broad-ranging skills and experiences. Remember that colleges value both experiences, so go for an opportunity that aligns more with your goals and what you hope to gain from the experience.
