High school jobs working with special ed students?

I'm interested in working with special education students and want to get some experience while still in high school. What kind of part-time jobs or volunteer opportunities should I be looking for to get involved in this field?

There are quite a few ways to gain some experience working with special needs students while still in high school. Here are a few ideas:

1. Volunteering at your local special needs school or classroom: Many schools and classrooms designed for students with special needs are open to volunteers to help assist. You could reach out to your school district or a local school that offers special education services to see if they have any opportunities.

2. Offering tutor or mentor services: Tutoring or mentoring is a great way to work closely with students with special needs. You might offer academic support, serve as a friend and mentor, or help them build daily living skills, consistent with their individual educational plans.

3. Working at a summer camps or other programs: There are many summer camps and after school programs designed specifically for children with disabilities where you could serve as a counselor or assistant.

4. Volunteering with an organization: There are several nonprofit organizations that work closely with individuals who have disabilities. You might consider reaching out to groups such as Special Olympics, Friendship Circle, or Best Buddies to see if they have any volunteer opportunities.

Remember that every interaction you have will be learning opportunity for you to adapt your communication and interpersonal skills to meet the needs of the individuals you're supporting. These experiences can be incredibly enriching and provide a unique perspective compared to more traditional high school jobs. Plus, these roles can be seen as Tier 3 or Tier 2 activities in the 4 Tiers of Extracurriculars depending on your level of commitment and leadership.
