Best computer science universities in the US?

I'm a junior interested in computer science and starting to look into universities. I'm curious which schools in the US are known for their computer science programs. Any tips on what to look for while applying?

Several universities in the United States are renowned for their excellent computer science programs.

1. Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT): With its rigorous programs and connections to the tech industry, MIT is often considered one of the best places to study computer science.

2. Stanford University: Located near Silicon Valley, Stanford has unique opportunities for internships and partnerships with tech companies.

3. Carnegie Mellon University (CMU): CMU's School of Computer Science is highly recognized and offers a range of specializations.

4. University of California, Berkeley (UC Berkeley): Berkeley's College of Engineering is known for its cutting-edge research and innovation in computer science.

5. Harvard University: Besides a strong CS program, Harvard offers a unique joint program in computer science and physics.

6. University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC): UIUC has a strong CS program with an emphasis on both theoretical understanding and practical application.

Regarding the admission process, note that these are extremely selective schools. Success in application requires strong academic credentials including high-grade point averages, high standardized test scores (though some schools have test-optional policies), and often several advanced placement (AP) courses in relevant fields. Additionally, having relevant extracurriculars and demonstrating a genuine passion for computer science through personal projects, internships, or research experiences could strengthen your application.

Remember to ensure that the environment and philosophy of each university match your learning style and professional goals. Look into each program’s curriculum, faculty, research opportunities, and the university's connections to the job market in your desired field. Also, consider factors outside of academics, such as location, campus culture, extracurriculars, financial aid, and dormitory living. Consider visiting the campuses if possible or virtually touring them to get a better sense of the colleges' atmospheres — to see if you can imagine yourself there for the next four years.
