Getting started as an online tutor entails a few steps. You first have to identify what subject(s) you're comfortable tutoring in—common ones include math, science, English, and standardized test prep. Next, you'd need to find a tutoring platform that suits you, like Chegg, Wyzant, or VIPKid, although there are many others. A lot of these platforms typically require completing an application that includes your education and qualifications in the subject(s) you wish to tutor, and in some cases, you may also have to pass a subject proficiency test.

One of the main advantages of online tutoring is the flexibility. You often have the ability to set your own hours, which makes it easier to fit tutoring around your school and extracurricular schedule. Plus, you're gaining experience in education and improving your own understanding of the subjects you tutor.

However, there can be occasional downsides. For instance, you might have to work odd hours to accommodate students in different time zones, especially if you're tutoring internationally. There could also be periods where there's less demand for tutors, and therefore fewer opportunities to earn. It’s crucial to be proactive in managing your time; make sure to block off enough time for not just the tutoring sessions, but also preparing for them.

Striking a balance between tutoring and your schoolwork involves good time management and organization. Designating specific hours of the day for studying, tutoring, relaxation, and other activities can be helpful. Overcommitting can easily lead to burnout, so try not to take on more students than you can handle. Remember, your own academics should always be your top priority. Running a schedule or using productivity apps like Todoist and Google Calendar can be beneficial in keeping track of tutoring sessions and school assignments to ensure you stay on top of both.

Lastly, make sure to take care of yourself! It’s easy to become overwhelmed with responsibilities, so don't forget to schedule time for self-care and relaxation. Happy tutoring!
