Where's the best place to study to be a translator in the US?

I'm really into languages and considering becoming a translator. Does anyone know which colleges in the US have the best programs for translation studies? I'd love recommendations on where to apply.

When looking at programs for translation studies, you want to find schools with strong language programs and faculties well-versed in translation theory and practice. Some colleges in the US fit this bill quite nicely.

1. Middlebury Institute of International Studies at Monterey: This institute is well-renowned for its Translation and Localization Management degree. It's an excellent place for those interested in translation, interpreting, localization, or language project management.

2. University of Massachusetts Amherst: The Comparative Literature program here has an option to specialize in Translation Studies. They focus on a rigorous theoretical framework with practical applications, so you will be well-prepared for a translator's role.

3. Kent State University: This university has one of the few dedicated Master’s programs in Translation in the country. Their program covers a large range of languages and also provides training in software and technology tools used by translators.

4. University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign: The university's Center for Translation Studies offers a Master's degree with various specializations such as literary translation, commercial translation, and more.

5. New York University (NYU): The Master’s in Translation at the School of Continuing and Professional Studies at NYU offers various language combinations. The program is designed to train students to meet the current demands in the translation field.

Remember, the best school for you depends on not only the strength of the programs but also the language pairs you are interested in specializing in. Check carefully whether the colleges have strong departments in both your source and target languages -- that's where you'll get the most out of your studies. Good luck with your applications!
