Can an F2 visa holder study in the US?

I'm currently in the US on an F2 visa and really want to pursue some studies here. Is it possible for me to enroll in a college while on this visa? What are my options if I'm aiming for something more than just casual classes?

An F2 visa holder, or dependent of an F1 visa holder, is allowed to enroll in part-time studies in academic or vocational classes. However, if you're intending to pursue a full-time academic course of study, you're required to change your visa status from F2 to F1. The change of status process involves filing form I-539 for 'Application to Extend/Change Nonimmigrant Status' to USCIS and clearly specifying your intent to switch to an F1 visa.

You'd also have to meet the admission requirements set by the college or university you want to attend which usually includes proof of English proficiency, transcripts from your previous schools, and a financial statement demonstrating you possess adequate financial resources to support your studies and living expenses without the necessity for employment.

Once the school accepts you, they will issue a Form I-20 for you to include in your change of status application. Keep in mind, while your change of status application is pending, you're not allowed to start your full-time studies. This process can take a few months, so plan accordingly. Your full-time studies may begin only after the change of status is approved by USCIS.

You should also keep in mind that if your F1 visa holder—i.e. spouse or parent—finishes their studies or changes their status, this will affect your F2 status. You'd need to adjust your status in response to theirs, whether it means changing to another visa type or leaving the country. As always, it's recommended to consult with an immigration lawyer or expert to understand all the specific implications for your individual situation.
