Studying part-time as an international student in the US

Is it possible for international students to study part-time in the US? If so, what are the requirements and potential drawbacks of not being a full-time student?

International students in the U.S. on F-1 visas are generally required to maintain full-time enrollment to keep their active visa status. This usually equates to at least 12 credit hours per academic term in undergraduate programs, though the specific number may vary by institution.

However, in some very specific circumstances, such as academic hardship or medical conditions, international students might be allowed to take fewer courses. Such a decision would have to be approved by a designated school official (DSO) and documented in the Student Exchange and Visitor Program (SEVIS).

One major drawback of part-time studies is that it can limit your on-campus employment and off-campus Curricular Practical Training (CPT) opportunities. Full-time students can work on-campus up to 20 hours per week during the academic year and full-time during breaks. Moreover, to be eligible for CPT or Optional Practical Training (OPT), international students generally must have been enrolled on a full-time basis for one full academic year.

Also, part-time enrollment could potentially affect your access to certain student services and facilities, as well as your eligibility for some scholarships and financial aid that typically require full-time enrollment.

Lastly, visa regulations can change, so it's important to always check the most updated guidelines from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and consult with your university's international student services office. They can provide you with the most accurate and up-to-date information to guide your decision-making.
