What's it like to study an AI major in the US?

I'm thinking about pursuing a major in artificial intelligence when I apply to US universities. What are some good schools for AI, and how rigorous are the programs? Any advice on preparing for this field in high school?

Artificial Intelligence, often housed within Computer Science departments, is an exciting and rapidly expanding field, with a variety of thematic focuses, from machine learning to natural language processing.

Some of the top schools renowned for AI studies are Stanford University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), and Carnegie Mellon University. These universities offer robust programs with access to advanced research opportunities, top-notch faculty, and real-world applications.

The rigor of an AI program can vary based on the institution, but in general, this field is quite demanding. It combines aspects of mathematics, computer science, and even philosophy, meaning you'll need a strong foundation in these areas. Coursework can include topics such as algorithms, data structures, linear algebra, and statistical theory alongside more specialized courses on machine learning, neural networks, robotics, and natural-language processing. It's a challenging field, but utterly fascinating and with immense future career potential.

To prepare in high school, focus on developing a strong background in math (like Calculus, Statistics) and computer science, if available. Familiarize yourself with programming languages (Python is a good start given its prominence in data science). Extracurriculars such as robotics, computing clubs, or math competitions can also exemplify your interest in the field.

Ultimately, what makes you stand out is a demonstrated passion for AI, backed by robust academic preparation. For colleges that require essays, sharing experiences or goals related to AI can further highlight your dedication to this field. Remember, though, that a well-rounded application also showcases who you are outside of academics, so continue to engage in non-academic interests and activities as well.
