How can I study and work in the US as an international student?

I'm looking into studying in the US and would love to work part-time while doing so. Can anyone share advice on how international students can manage studying and working simultaneously in the US?

Absolutely! Many international students choose to work part-time while studying in the US, and there are several employment options available to you.

Firstly, it's important to understand your visa limitations. Most often, international students are on an F-1 visa, which comes with specific guidelines on employment. On an F-1 visa, you can work on-campus up to 20 hours per week during the academic year, and full-time during breaks. On-campus employment can include working in a university office, cafeteria, or library, or doing research for a professor.

Off-campus work is typically not permitted during your first academic year but may be allowed in subsequent years under certain types of programs called Curricular Practical Training (CPT) and Optional Practical Training (OPT). These programs are intended to provide real-world training in your field of study. CPT is usually an internship or cooperative education program, and it must be part of your curriculum. OPT, on the other hand, allows you to work either pre-completion of your studies (part-time during the academic year or full-time during breaks) or post-completion (usually full time).

Secondly, it's vital to manage your time effectively. Balancing academics with a part-time job can be challenging. Setting up a schedule that includes study time, work hours, and time for relaxation can help. You may also want to take advantage of academic resources like tutoring or student study groups.

Finally, make sure you stay aware of your physical and mental health. It can be easy to overwork oneself in pursuit of academic and professional goals. Ensuring that you're taking enough time for relaxation and recreation is essential to avoid burnout.

Remember to regularly communicate with your school's International Student Services Office or another designated school official, they will be your best source of up-to-date information and guidance on the limitations and requirements of your student visa.
