How Can I Find My First Job While in High School?

I'm looking for my first job as a high school student. Where should I start my search, and what are some typical jobs or places that hire high schoolers? Any advice on crafting a resume?

It's wonderful that you're taking the initiative to glean some work experience while you're still in high school. It serves not only as a means to earn money but also provides valuable insight into the working world!

When it comes to job searching, start by exploring local businesses - think retail stores, fast-food restaurants, or movie theaters for instance. These places usually hire younger staff and can be great for getting some basic job experience under your belt. Your school may also offer some part-time job opportunities, like tutoring or working in the library, so it might be a good idea to check with a school counselor or another staff member.

If you're involved in any extracurricular activities or clubs, consider looking for related work. For example, if you're part of a robotics club, a tech store might consider you a good match. It's a great way to showcase your passion and make your experience relatable to the job.

Creating a resume with little to no job experience can seem challenging, but remember, you have plenty to offer! List any volunteer work, club involvement, honors or awards, or skills that you have which can be applied to a job setting. You don't need formal work experience to showcase accountability, teamwork, or other skills.

Don't forget to make use of the resources available to you. Many schools offer resume workshops or have counselors available to assist with resume writing.

Start each point with an action verb and be quantitative where possible. Instead of saying "Helped with a book drive," you can say "Assisted in a book drive, sorting and packing over 500 books for donation." That gives employers a clearer picture of your responsibilities.

Remember, the process of job hunting can require perseverance, so don't get discouraged if you don't land the first job you apply for. Keep applying, and use each application or interview as a learning experience to improve for the next one!
