Can You Study Norwegian in the US During the Summer?

I'm considering learning Norwegian over the summer in the US. Are there intensive summer programs or language camps for college or high school students? I'd appreciate any recommendations or personal experiences.

Language learning can certainly be a rewarding experience! In the US, there are several summer programs where high school and college students can undertake intensive Norwegian lessons.

One well-known program is the Summer Language Institute (SLI) at the University of Pittsburgh, which includes 8-week, full-immersion programs for a variety of languages, including Norwegian. It is quite demanding and intensive, as these courses cover a full year's worth of college language instruction. No prior language knowledge is needed as they cater to beginners as well.

Another program worth looking into is offered by the Concordia Language Villages based in Minnesota. They have an extensive variety of languages, including Norwegian. Their focus is on cultural immersion alongside language instruction. This program allows students to "live the language" through culturally authentic foods, traditional clothing, architecture, customs, activities, and more.

Additionally, some universities may also provide summer language courses. For example, the University of North Dakota used to have a Norwegian Summer Language and Culture Seminar though it seems to be currently on hiatus.

Also, don't forget to check your preferred University's summer offerings. Even if they don't offer Norwegian during the academic year, they might offer it during the summer or be able to assist you in finding a program.

Lastly, given that these programs may vary in their selectivity, topic focus, location, cost, and other factors, I recommend researching each one thoroughly to select the best fit for your needs.

Just remember, learning a language can be difficult and time-consuming, particularly if it is as complex as Norwegian. However, with dedication, practice, and patience, it's an entirely achievable goal. God Lykke (Good Luck)!
