What's it like to be an assistant high school football coach?

I've been thinking about potentially getting involved in coaching at a high school level, particularly in football. What does being an assistant coach involve, and what kind of time commitment does it require?

Being an assistant high school football coach can be both rewarding and demanding. It's a role that requires significant time commitment and involves a range of responsibilities, depending on the needs of the team and the overarching approach of the head coach.

Key duties often include developing and implementing training programs, analyzing player performance, assisting in game day strategy, and managing equipment. You might also be called to aid in designing and directing team drills and exercises under the head coach's guidance. Communication is also a big part of the role, as explaining complex strategies and techniques in ways that young athletes can digest and apply is vital. So expect to work on improving your articulation and motivational speaking skills.

In terms of time commitment, out-of-season responsibilities may vary significantly, but in-season work can be quite intensive. Practices typically occur daily after school and can run for two to three hours. Additionally, you'll have games, often, but not always, on Friday nights, plus potential weekend travel for away games. There will also be time needed for watching film, going over plays, strategy meetings, and any administrative work associated with your role.

All this said, remember that coaching offers a unique opportunity to mentor young athletes, help them develop their skills, and potentially shape their life trajectories. While the role is time-intensive, many find it deeply rewarding to be directly involved in a sport they love while positively influencing the next generation of athletes. Bear in mind, though, that along with your knowledge of football tactics and techniques, you'll also be a role model in terms of sportsmanship, respect, and discipline. It's a big commitment, but one that can be both enjoyable and meaningful.
