Defining a seasonal job

What exactly does it mean when a job is described as seasonal? Does this typically imply only holiday work, or does it encompass other times of the year too? I'm trying to understand what to expect from seasonal employment.

The term typically refers to a temporary job that occurs during a specific time of the year when an employer needs extra help. This need often arises due to a predictable increase in demand related to the season.

For instance, retail stores often hire seasonal employees during the holidays to accommodate increased shopping. Likewise, companies tied to tourism might offer more seasonal jobs during peak travel seasons, such as summer or Christmas break. You'll also see this in industries tied to nature's cycles. For example, agriculture calls for more workers during planting or harvest seasons, while ski resorts need staff only in winter months.

As for what to expect, the specifics will depend on the industry and the job itself. However, generally, seasonal employment often involves working irregular hours (like nights, weekends, or overtime) to accommodate the high demand during the busy period. When the season ends, the job typically concludes as well.
