Exploring seasonal marine biology jobs as a high schooler

I’m interested in marine biology and wondering if there are any seasonal opportunities available for high school students. Are there positions or internships during the summer that might offer a glimpse into this field?

There are numerous summer opportunities available in the field of marine biology for high school students. Highly selective programs like the Research Science Institute, Simons Summer Research Program, and the Summer Science Program in Biochemistry do include marine biology in their curriculum.

Besides these, many aquariums and research institutes offer internships or volunteer positions for high school students during the summer. These positions can give you firsthand experience with marine life, and you might even get to assist with the maintenance and care of animals, give educational talks, or help with ongoing research projects. Although these opportunities can be competitive to secure, they are excellent ways to explore your interest in marine biology.

Additionally, you could consider enrolling in a marine biology summer camp or program. Organizations like SeaCamp San Diego, or a residential summer science program at a university with a strong marine science department offer great opportunities for hands-on learning and real-world experience.

Remember to start your search early, as some of these opportunities can be quite competitive and may require an application process. A great way to stand out is to have some background knowledge and show genuine enthusiasm for the subject, so consider taking a related class or joining relevant clubs at your school to further demonstrate your interest!
