What majors can you study at West Point Military Academy?

I'm interested in attending West Point and want to know more about the academic side. What majors are offered there, and how flexible is the curriculum in terms of choosing a field of study?

West Point, formally known as the United States Military Academy (USMA), offers a wide range of academic programs. The goal is to provide a well-rounded education that contributes to the development of cadets' leadership abilities, complementing their military training.

Some of the majors offered at West Point include, but are not limited to, Civil Engineering, Systems Engineering, Computer Science, Economics, History, Geography, Environmental Science, Life Science, and Physics.

It's essential to note, though, that all cadets, regardless of their selected major, must take core courses in math, science, humanities, social sciences, and foreign language. This broad-based education ensures that graduates possess versatile skills and comprehensive knowledge to address the modern Army's multifaceted challenges.

Cadets cannot pick their major until the end of their freshman year (also known as their "plebe" year), which means you have some time to explore the curriculum and find what you enjoy the most before deciding.

However, as flexible as the curriculum might seem, it's still structured around preparing you for an Army career post-graduation. After commissioning, second lieutenants are expected to serve active-duty for 5 years, and spend another 3 in the reserves. Keep this in mind when considering your major as the intent isn't as much about preparing you for a civilian career (although West Point certainly can), but rather to develop officers who are capable of leading in complex and uncertain environments.

Simultaneously, many West Point graduates have found success in civilian careers after their military service, with their rigorous and comprehensive education serving them well in different fields.
