Top high school extracurriculars for college apps

Which extracurriculars are most impressive to colleges? I want to make sure I'm involved in activities that will stand out on my applications.

While there's no definitive list of 'whitelist' extracurriculars that all colleges universally find impressive, the most valued ones tend to generate deep involvement, demonstrate significant achievements or leadership, or exhibit a specialized skill or talent. There's a general tier system often used:

- Tier 1: These are rare activities that show exceptional achievement at the national or international level, such as winning a prestigious competition or award. For instance, achieving rank in the International Math Olympiad or winning a Congressional Art award are phenomenal examples.

- Tier 2: Though more common than tier 1, these activities still showcase high levels of achievement and leadership. Being student body president, being a state orchestra performer, or emerging as a top tennis player in the state fall under this.

- Tier 3: These activities highlight a student's interests and some involvement, albeit without the distinction of Tiers 1 and 2. Holding a leadership role in a club or being a captain of a sports team could be considered tier 3.

- Tier 4: Far more common and generally less impressive to admissions officers. They include general club membership, general involvement in sports or music, or basic volunteering.

It's crucial to understand that quality matters more than quantity. Being deeply involved in a few activities where you demonstrate initiative and commitment is far better than a laundry list of superficial involvements. Remember, admissions officers prefer a 'spike' over 'well-rounded' profiles—they're attracted to students demonstrating a high degree of mastery in specific fields. Also, your activities should align with your goals and passion. So, take time to reflect on what you truly enjoy and where your skills lie—successful college apps have a strong narrative and your activities should correspond with your intended major or career.
